Steeped in 300 years of history and located in a place of beauty, Edenton, North Carolina was the first colonial capital of North Carolina from 1722 to 1743. Many historic buildings can be visited in Edenton, population 5,000, which in the 18th and 19th centuries was a busy port and business hub at the head of Albemarle Sound. More than 25 homes and public buildings are included as a North Carolina State Historic Site. The Roanoke River Lighthouse was originally in the middle of the sound, where it helped guide sailors from Albemarle Sound into the Roanoke River. It is the last surviving example of a screw pile lighthouse, which means it was on stone stilts, or piles, that were screwed into the bottom of the sound. In 2012, after an extensive and impressive restoration, the lighthouse was moved to its present location just offshore in Edenton.
